Spotswood was chosen as the site for Melbourne’s first sewage pumping station because it was close to the mouth of the Yarra River, making it one of the lowest points in Melbourne. Its lo ion allowed sewage collected throughout the city to flow under gravity to the one central point, from where it was pumped to the treatment works at Werribee.

Melbourne Water is undertaking works at the Mordialloc Sewer Pump Station lo ed at 62 Chute Street corner of Chute and Bear Streets . This pump station transfers the flow from South East Water’s Beach Road Main Sewer that services Mentone, Parkdale and Mordialloc.
In July 2019 we began work to construct a new permanent pumping station at the Melbourne Water reservoir site. This pumping station was completed and commissioned August 2020. In November 2020, we began work to decommission the temporary pumping station. All work was completed in December 2020. Take a look at images of the pump station below.
